Yokohama is a historic area that has grown as an international city ever since its port opened in 1859. Around Motomachi-Chukagai Station on the Minatomirai Line lies Yokohama Chinatown, the largest in Japan with some 600 businesses, where authentic Chinese restaurants and the Kanteibyo temple line the streets and the lively atmosphere makes for wonderful walking and dining. The Bashamichi and Kannai neighbourhoods are known as one of the birthplaces of Western civilisation in Japan; here the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History, housed in the former Yokohama Specie Bank head office (an Important Cultural Property), the ginkgo-lined Nihon-odori and Yokohama Park with its Yokohama Stadium bring the atmosphere of the port's early days into harmony with a modern townscape. Several international schools serve the foreign community, making the city reassuring for families living in Japan for the first time. Yokohama Station is served by numerous lines, offering the convenience of reaching central Tokyo in around 30 minutes.
