Located in the southwestern part of Tokyo’s 23 wards, Setagaya City is a highly popular residential area that frequently ranks near the top of “Most Desirable Places to Live” surveys. It offers an excellent balance of convenience and quality of living, making it an attractive base for foreign professionals working in Tokyo.
One of the area’s central hubs is Sangenjaya. Around Sangenjaya Station (served by the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line and Setagaya Line), residents will find a wide range of commercial facilities, restaurants, and cafés, allowing them to enjoy both everyday life and leisure time with ease.
Another notable area is Futako-Tamagawa, home to large-scale shopping complexes such as Tamagawa Takashimaya S.C. and expansive green spaces along the Tama River. This area offers a lifestyle that harmoniously blends nature with urban convenience.
In terms of transportation, Sangenjaya Station is only 5–6 minutes from Shibuya, providing excellent access to central Tokyo. The ward is also served by multiple private railway lines, including the Odakyu Line, Keio Line, and various Tokyu lines, ensuring convenient commuting to the city center as well as to Yokohama. In addition, well-developed bus networks and bicycle lanes make daily mobility within the ward highly comfortable.
Setagaya’s living environment is characterized by a coexistence of quiet residential neighborhoods and lively streets lined with stylish cafés and boutiques. The ward is rich in parks and green spaces, with Setagaya Park serving as a popular community gathering place. Essential infrastructure—including medical facilities, supermarkets, banks, childcare centers, and international schools—is well established, allowing foreign residents to live comfortably and with peace of mind.
Local government offices and community organizations also provide consultation services and multilingual guidance for foreign residents, supporting essential aspects of daily life such as resident registration, taxation, and garbage separation rules. The increasing availability of multilingual information from both public and private sectors further enhances the area’s accessibility for international residents.
Setagaya City is also recognized as a center of culture and trends. Areas such as Shimokitazawa and Sangenjaya are well known for their vibrant youth culture, featuring vintage clothing stores, cafés, live music venues, and theaters. In recent years, the number of natural-concept cafés and artisanal bakeries has continued to grow, adding to the appeal of everyday life in the ward.
In terms of future development, the Chitose-Karasuyama Station South Plaza Urban Redevelopment Project is currently underway on the south side of Chitose-Karasuyama Station. A mixed-use complex approximately 140 meters tall with 34 floors is planned, with urban planning approval targeted for fiscal year 2026 and completion aimed for fiscal year 2034. This project is expected to further enhance the ward’s convenience and overall attractiveness.
With its excellent access to central Tokyo, comprehensive living infrastructure, rich cultural environment, and strong support systems for foreign residents, Setagaya City stands out as an exceptionally appealing residential area for international professionals living and working in Japan.
